Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis

Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN), including both immune-mediated and complement-mediated forms and dense deposit disease, are problems in which the immune system is damaging the kidneys. Dr. Yarnell is one of only a handful of naturopathic physicians worldwide who has any experience helping patients with these rare conditions. He is currently in the process of writing the definitive textbook about how to apply naturopathic principles and medicine for patients with MPGN, making him truly an expert to help you if you are affected by MPGN.

Dr. Yarnell will work with you to investigate what caused the problem, first and foremost. Sometimes this is not obvious, but often we know several factors are crucial that are overlooked in conventional medicine, notably the problems of increased intestinal permeability ("leaky gut") and a disordered mixture of microbes in your gut. At the same time, various treatments (mostly herbs) are used to calm down the overactive immune system component(s) that are damaging the kidneys. Dietary manipulation is often necessary, as food antigens can become triggers of overactive immune function. All of these are carefully curated to insure safety with any conventional treatments, and indeed often therapeutic choices are made to optimize the efficacy while reducing the toxicity of drugs. In cases where simpler measures do not work, Dr. Yarnell can guide you through considering more esoteric but rising therapies that address underlying problems with an aim toward trying to actually resolve MPGN, including helminth therapy and fecal microbial transplants.
